Italy
Italy has a long history with wine, dating back to the Greek Empire which spread the vine across much of Southern Italy. There have been as many as 4,000 'indigenous' grape varieties planted in Italy, thousands of which have disappeared and either become extinct or are on the verge. There are between 200 and 400 grape varieties used for wine in Italy today, but less than 200 for commercial use.
The climate and soils of Italy are very diverse and therefore the styles of wines and grapes used for wine are quite broad. There are 20 individual 'States' which have wine sub-regions, they are: Abruzzo, Alto-Adige, Trentino, Basilicata, Campania, Calabria, Emilia Romagna, Friuli-Venezia-Gulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Puglia, Sardegna, Siclilia, Toscana, Umbria, Veneto, and Valle d'Aosta

This wine is made by Stefano Chioccioli, one of Tuscany's great wine consultants who also works with such great wines as Fanti in Brunello and i Gusti e Zanza in Pisa. His wines always show great balance and excellent sense of place (aka Terroir). BIN: 0098709083257

This big, ripe Sangiovese has aromas of blackberry, dark ripe cherry with notes of both minerals and a touch of flowers. The palate is concentrated and deep with dense, sweet fruits and ripe tannins to balance the alcohol and big fruits. BIN: 0726452007915

Prunotto
Barolo Bussia DOCG 1999
Northern Italy, Italy, WINES
2001 has turned out to be an excellent vintage in the Piemonte region of Northern Italy. As with all Barolos this wine is produced from 100% nebbiolo planted on the best sites of the region. Prunotto was originally founded by the great winemaker (and today a consultant), Beppe Cola. Today the winery is owned and managed by the Antinori family.
This is a great wine with aromas of rose, licorice, violets, ripe dark cherry, vanilla and spice from the oak and a big rich, full palate that lingers for a very long time afterwards. Yet all this is beautifully balanced by structure, silky ripe tannins and acidity to allow for years more of enjoyment. From my experience this wine will be at this level for at least another 5 to 10 years. BIN: 0087236421045

Allegrini
Allegrini Amarone Classico DOC 2001
Northern Italy, Italy, WINES
Amarone is a specialty of the Valpolicella region in Veneto, it is made by drying the grapes for upto three months after harvest. This process reduces the amount of water in the grapes and makes for a more concentrated wine. Traditionally this was done on straw mats in attics and random rooms in the valley, the Allegrini family revolutionized the production by building a temperature and humidity controlled building to prevent the grapes from being infected by 'noble rot'. Noble Rot is the character that is important to producing Sauternes in Bordeaux and Tokaji in Hungary, both white wines. The Noble Rot character is lovely in a white wine but some people find it intrusive in red wines...especially dry ones such as Amarone.
This wine is deep and dark, with aromas that are reminscent of both big Rhone reds and Ports, but has a very clean attack and notes of dried black cherry, raspberry, black pepper, gamey characters and some well propotioned oak. The palate is rich and full with sweet fruit character and more oak in the very long finish. This big wine is best suited to robust Italian fare, cheese and cold winter nights. All Amarone is at least 15% in alcohol, so be careful, the smoothness and sweet fruit could trick you into over indulging. BIN: 0098709071001

Antinori
Tignanello 2003
Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
Tignanello is one of Italy's first 'super tuscans'. Meaning it is a wine that abandoned the Italian wine heirachy and DOCG designation of Chianti and Chianti Classico in order to produce a higher quality wine using 'illegal' (at the time) grapes in the blend. The laws have since changed and now embrace those illegal grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and even Syrah.
This vintage is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc - the blend in pretty consistant from vintage to vintage. Today this wine could actually be labeled as a Chianti Classico DOCG, but obviously the name and reputation of Tignanillo does not need the added bonus of DOCG or Chianti Classico.
Look for typical Tuscan Sangiovese notes and aromas of tobacco, dark cherry along with Cabernet notes like blackberry and blackcurrants. The palate is full-bodied, with fine, fruit tannins a touch of tar and tobacco lingering in a long finish. BIN:
