Sicily
This large Southern Island was at one time the Greek colony or region for wine, so the wine history here is very old even if it has been largely forgotten until quite recently. Today the regions wines are more than Marsala, there are wonderful red and white wine produced as well as sweet and rose wines. The most important red grape is Nero d'Avola which can make some world-class wines as well as workhorse value wines.
