New York

New York State is one of the oldest wine regions in the U.S. and is currently the second largest wine producing state, behind California. The Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes Regions are the oldest, while Long Island and Niagara Escarpment are showing great promise with certain wine styles and grape varietals. Lake Erie is the other region. All the regions are American Viticultural Areas.

Paumanok
Paumanok Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Long Island, New York, WINES

Eastern Long Island has a very good climate for producing crisp, clean Sauvignon Blanc.  This wine has notes of lemon, lime, green apple and a hint of grapefruit.  The finish is refreshing with a fine length.

Jamesport Vineyards
Jamesport Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Long Island, New York, WINES

The stainless steel portion of the 2005 Sauvignon Blanc adds a crisp acidity, and the barrel fermented portion gives the wine its richness and earthiness. The exotic flavors of citrus fruits and candied ginger were present in the ripe fruit at harvest. The finished blend is more proof that Sauvignon Blanc is so well suited to Long Island.

Martha Clara
Martha Clara Brut NV
Long Island, New York, WINES

Winemaker Gilles Martin worked for Roederer Estate in Mendocino producing some excellent Sparkling Wines and he has brought that same expertise and dedication to the North Fork of Long Island.  The wine is a blend of about 35% Pinot Noir and 65% Chardonnay from the Estate.  As with fine Champagne the wine is aged on the lees for about 18 months in it's origninal and final bottle.  This is a crisp sparkling wine with aromas of green and red apples, citrus, some cherry and a fine doughy note.  The palate is complex, elegant and lingering.  A very good value Sparkling wine from any region.

Paumanok
Paumanok Festival Red 2005, North ForK, LI
Long Island, New York, WINES

2005 has turned out to be an excellent vintage for the red wines of Long Island, it can be a bit spotty though as some producers were caught off-gaurd by the hurrican influenced weather at the beginning of the harvest season.  Paumanok wines are a fine success in 2005.  The Festival Red is their entry level wines and this version is very fine with notes of red and black cherries, a hint of red raspberry and some smoky aromas. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Blend. - Christopher Miller, Advanced Sommelier

La Ferme Martin 2003
North Fork, Long Island, New York

Light gold in color. The nose is very aromatic showing ripe pears and some lime and Kiwi notes. The mouth-feel is light yet lush and driven by wonderful bright acidity and beautiful mineral notes. The finish is long and focused with a slight touch of creaminess and fine lees flavors. This is the perfect light summer wine not overburdened by oak or alcohol.
