Alsace is the last 'large' region to receive an AOC (Appelation Côntrolée) in 1962. The region has a history of being bounced (faught over or occupied by) between the French and the Germans with the last trasfer of power being after World War II.
Today the region is best known for dry white wines produced from Riesling, but the region also produces excellent dessert wines and wines from Pinot Gris (what the Italians call Pinot Grigio), Pinot Blanc, Gewürtztraminer, Muscat and Sylvaner.
